Empowering women in the Bahariyah region of Egypt: Workshops for sustainable development
Farms4Climate partners SEKEM and Heliopolis University organised two workshops in the El Harra and El Wahat oases, aiming to help women take leadership roles in their communities. The event addressed their interests, aspirations, barriers, and needs to access potential markets and thus support the region's inclusive and sustainable growth.
Two impactful workshops were recently conducted in the El Harra and El Wahat oases in the Bahariyah region of Egypt, targeting local women as a key driver of community-based development. Organized by representatives from Farms4Climate partners SEKEM and Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development, the events brought together experts with extensive experience in empowering community-based organizations.
The workshops focused on fostering dialogue with more than 50 local women to explore their aspirations for economic independence and sustainable development. Topics included opportunities in sewing, embroidery, handicrafts, home gardening, and other income-generating activities. The discussions also highlighted the importance of creating suitable markets and trade channels to support these ventures. As part of the program, a survey was conducted to gather data on the socio-economic situation of the women and their families, providing valuable insights to tailor future initiatives.
During the workshops, SEKEM representatives also summarised the micro-credit fund that SEKEM established with examples of women from the 13 villages in the region starting businesses and earning an income. Furthermore, it was explained how Heliopolis University can contribute providing knowledge on Entrepreneurship, and the main hindering factors for the women in the area were discussed, as well as prospective markets and the needs to access them.
The anticipated impact of these workshops is significant. Empowering women to take leadership roles in their communities is expected to enhance awareness about the need for education, training, and financial support. This process aims to create sustainable systems for cooperation and development, not only within but also through partnerships beyond the communities. By focusing on women's empowerment, these workshops pave the way for inclusive and sustainable growth, ensuring the community's active participation in shaping a better future.
