Carbon Farming Report

Function

The tool allows users to select a series of land parcels within Spain. Once selected, it performs analyses on various spectral bands from multiple satellite images and integrates publicly available databases to generate a PDF report. This report includes key information about the selected land, such as slope, elevation, clay content, organic matter content, and vegetation indices like SAVI and NDMI. Additionally, it provides an estimate of the amount of carbon the soil could sequester if regenerative agricultural practices were implemented, as well as the potential financial gains for farmers participating in a carbon capture project in the designated area.

Utility

Practical Application

The tool is useful for:

  • Soil and vegetation assessment: It provides estimates on soil composition, organic matter, and vegetation indices (SAVI, NDMI) to help understand land conditions.
  • Carbon sequestration estimation: It calculates the potential carbon storage increase under regenerative practices and estimates possible financial returns from carbon farming.
  • General land management: Offers insights that may support decisions on agricultural practices, but results are indicative and should be validated with field data.

Beneficiaries

The tool can be beneficial for:

  • Farmers looking to assess their soil and explore carbon farming opportunities.
  • Researchers and agronomists interested in preliminary data for soil and vegetation studies.
  • Policymakers and consultants needing general insights for land use and sustainability strategies.

While useful for a first assessment, the data provided should be complemented with on-site analysis for precise decision-making.

Status

Completed and in use. Minor updates are made occasionally to improve the tool or fix occasional bugs.
